DR. PETER OLU. OLAYIWOLA
Chairman, Certification Board

The field of Computer Forensics arose out of the need to give digital evidence in litigation and to combat internet, digital, and cyber crimes including ATM fraud, money laundering, internet fraud, identity theft, fraudulent websites, mitigation against computer hackers and other cyber crimes.

Computer Forensics, therefore, is the science of detection and investigation of crime committed on computers, computer networks, the internet and other digital devices with the intent of giving digital evidence in litigation.  Presently, Nigeria imports most of the cyber security, digital and computer forensics experts from abroad. The Computer Forensics Institute, Nigeria (CFIN) intends to transfer these modern skills and know-how to interested Nigerians.
.
A society where digital crime is limited solely by the criminal’s imagination is an unhealthy one.  This sort of dangerous scenario must be controlled through the efforts of cyber security, digital and computer forensic examiners - individuals who specialize in the prevention and detection of digital and computer crime and who support law enforcement agencies and the judiciary by skillful handling of digital evidences.

Examples of computer-related crimes (include e-payment fraud/e-commerce fraud, money laundering, identity theft, etc) harassment, copyright offences, organized crime, pornography, distribution of crime-related items on the net, unauthorized intrusion, malicious attacks on systems and networks, and computer misuse.

The opportunities for criminals to use digital electronics are numerous: mobile phones hold details of criminal contacts and text messages; sophisticated fraud is carried out by identity theft; serious crimes are daily committed using the email and other messaging services on the net. The combination of availability, simplicity of use, mobility, phenomenally high performance and low prices offers the digital and computer criminals a wide area of  possibilities.

A society where digital crime is limited solely by the criminal imagination is an unhealthy one.  This sort of dangerous scenario must be controlled through the efforts of digital and computer forensic specialists (Chartered Computer Forensics Examiners) -- individuals who specialize in the prevention of digital and computer crime and support law enforcement agencies and the judiciary by skillful handling of digital evidences.

THE NEED FOR COMPUTER FORENSICS EXPERTS:

Due to increasing police and other security agencies’ awareness of the importance of computer-based evidence in criminal cases, there is an expanding need for digital and computer forensics professionals with the abilities to reliably handle sensitive and irreplaceable materials, to investigate those materials in an appropriate manner, and to prepare appropriate reports for legal personnel.

The skills required by the computer forensics examiner are therefore very broad -- deeply technical on the one hand and highly professional on the other.
